Job Title:
Sterile Processing Scope Technician
Job Duties:
Under general supervision and according to established procedures, performs technical work involved in cleaning, inspecting, testing and assemble all of the flexible and rigid scopes, sheaths, cords, instruments, and other related products to ensure that they are sterile and in proper working order. Works collaboratively with physicians and OR staff trouble shooting and problem solving scope issues. Recognize defective/unsafe instrumentation through visual inspection and appropriate testing. Work collaboratively with the Inventory Coordinator and Vendors to coordinate repairs and/or replace damaged scopes and instruments. Will maintaining appropriate levels of backup scopes and other instruments to avoid set down time. The Scope Technician will assist in the training and orientation of new and existing staff to department operations related to the care and handling of scopes, scope instrumentation and related products in both SPD and the OR. Must be able to perform all duties of an SPD Technician during down time when scopes and scope related instruments are not in need of being processed.
Experience/Requirements:
Must have 3 to 5 years experience as a Sterile Processing Technician. Good verbal and written communication skills. Must have critical thinking skills to problem solve.

JOB SUMMARY:
Responsible for the overall direction and management of a centralized program for cleaning, sterilizing, assembling, and distributing supplies and equipment. Performs various management tasks including hiring, evaluating, and disciplining employees; develop and conduct orientation programs; develops, implements, and enforces policies and procedures. Resolves CPD related problems. Performs other related duties as requested by authorized personnel.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Oversees department activities related to cleaning, sterilization, assembly and distribution of supplies and equipment used in patient care activity.
2. Develop and implement strategies related to quality and efficiency for the department. Monitors and assesses quality for changes. Delegates staff resources to maximize department efficiency and to maintain quality.
3. Interviews, hires, evaluates performance, and disciplines department personnel when necessary.
4. Develops, revises, and presents orientation and training programs designed to teach Medical Center employees the principles and procedures relating to the processing of equipment and supplies, safety, and general organizational information.
5. Exercises a substantial level of managerial discretion in assisting in developing, implementing, and enforcing department policies and procedures. Complies with and enforces the Medical Center’s labor agreement. Participates in the grievance procedure as required.
6. Maintains contact with various personnel internal and external to the medical Center to resolve various problems. Services on various committees and task forces as required.
7. Prepares budget packages. Operates department within budgetary limits and utilizes good, cost effective judgement with discretionary expenditures.
8. Assures department compliance with local, state, federal and accrediting agencies regulations and standards. Reviews and corrects violations or deficiencies.
9. Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by reading appropriate books, journals, and other literature and attending related seminars and conferences.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Must have a bachelor degree in a related field from an accredited college and must possess knowledge and theory as normally acquired through completion of this degree.
2. Must have successfully completed the Central Service Technical Training Course offered by Purdue University of the International Association of Hospital /Central Service Management Association or similar certification.
3. Five (5) years SPD/CPD experience required.
4. Must have approximately four (4) to five (5) years of progressively more responsible central processing work experience necessary in order to gain full understanding of sterilization and aseptic techniques. Progressive experience should include managing a full central service operation. Surgery experience desirable.
5. Must have ability and experience with the delivery of training/inservice programs and evaluation of employee progress and course curriculum as related to cleaning, sterilizing, assembling and distribution of patient care equipment and supplies.
6. Must possess analytical skills necessary to make effective decisions, prepare and administer budgets, prepare and administer policies and procedures, prepare various special and recurring reports and analyses, and resolve complex central processing related problems.
7. Must possess guest relation and interpersonal skills necessary to effectively interact with employee, visitors and other Medical Center personnel.
8. Must have knowledge of inventory control systems within a healthcare setting.
